How should a new sports card collector start their collection?

We can't all start out with a Mickey Mantle signed baseball card? Where should a beginner start? I am interested in getting more into sports memorabilia. Specifically, collecting NFL and MLB cards.

I think the best way to start a sports card collection is to just start. Buy as many as you can afford. I know there are people out there that are making some serious money collecting rare sports memorabilia. I know I would probably pay good money to get a rare Peyton Manning card.
